35th AIMS Annual Management Education Convention

December 15th, 2024 (Sunday) – December 17th, 2024 (Tuesday)

Perpetuum: 24

AVIRAL: ADVITIYA: ANANT

The theme for the 35th AIMS Annual Convention, “PERPETUUM,” meaning “perpetual,” reflects the continuous and evolving nature of knowledge, leadership, and education in an ever-changing world. It continues from previous conventions, which focused on the post-pandemic recovery and emerging management paradigms. As economies strive for transformation and global competitiveness, the theme emphasizes that the quest for knowledge is AVIRAL (unending), ADVITIYA (unique), and ANANT (infinite).

Reasoning Behind the Theme:

  1. Continuity in Change: “PERPETUUM” resonates with the idea of change as a constant force. While management education must continuously adapt to new technologies, regulatory environments, and societal needs, its core mission—developing future leaders—remains unwavering. This theme recognizes that the pursuit of excellence in education is a never-ending journey.
  2. Impact Beyond Outcomes: The focus of management education is shifting from merely achieving measurable outcomes to creating a deeper, lasting impact. In a world with evolving policies aimed at global competitiveness, the quality of education must transcend traditional outputs to ensure long-term value. This requires a nuanced approach to governance, managing stakeholder expectations, and fostering an environment where institutions can innovate and grow.
  3. Preparing Visionary Leaders: As industries change rapidly, future leaders must possess not just technical knowledge but the wisdom to apply it in a way that balances prosperity with sustainability. This unending (AVIRAL) quest requires skills that evolve with the context, helping leaders navigate complex, interconnected systems while maintaining ethical and sustainable business practices.
  4. Unique Solutions for Emerging Challenges: In management, the three P’s—People, Planet, and Profit—and the three E’s—Efficiency, Effectiveness, and Economy—must be in harmony to develop unique (ADVITIYA) solutions. This holistic approach ensures that management education is not only relevant but also deeply connected to societal and environmental responsibilities.
  5. Faculty as Facilitators: The role of educators is transforming from being conventional teachers to becoming facilitators who guide students through experiential learning and problem-solving. The infinite (ANANT) nature of knowledge means that education must evolve with generational needs, ensuring that students acquire the critical thinking skills, adaptability, and emotional stability required for success in a rapidly changing world.

The theme “PERPETUUM” thus captures the essence of management education’s ongoing evolution. It underscores the importance of adapting to new challenges while staying rooted in the timeless pursuit of knowledge and leadership, serving both current and future generations.

Sub Themes:

The convention theme and its framework were thoughtfully developed through extensive interaction with key stakeholders in management education. By gathering their insights on the processes, outcomes, and impacts of management education, the theme and sub-themes are designed to address the most pressing challenges and opportunities. These elements serve as a forward-looking guide, identifying emerging issues and proposing strategies to enhance the effectiveness of management education in meeting stakeholder needs and ensuring its long-term relevance and impact. The five dimensions of the theme, developed into five sub-themes, comprehensively cover the critical issues and challenges facing management education under the theme “Perpetuum.”

Vision 2030 : Harnessing the Future
1 Addressing the tectonic Shifts
  • The substantive regulatory mandates brought about by the proposed changes in education and national policies
  • The mercurial development of technology and its adoption in all areas of the economy
2 Enhancing faculty competencies to excel in the new paradigm
  • Given the shifts and changing stakeholders’ needs the challenge is to ensure faculty competence and knowledge currencies in terms of teaching and learning, research and skill development.
  • Faculty are central to delivering major institutional outcomes, making their continuous growth and adaptability essential for driving excellence in the new educational paradigm.
3 Research & Innovation in the Indian Context
  • Emphasis on applied research, which is cross-sectional, is imperative. The focus of research needs to be on identifying the core of the issue and finding creative solutions. A congenial environment is needed to foster innovation and promote entrepreneurship.
  • Innovation is much talked about but the culture and fostering is missing.
4 Pathways to creating excellence in management education
  • There is need to create and encourage holistic and enlightened leadership for management education to ensure that our institutions are truly “learning” and not just teaching
  • The challenges to value need to be effectively addressed
  • The pathway to quality via accreditation is slippery and outcomes questionable- what next?
5 Revitalizing the triple-bottom approach for management education
  • The issues of UNSDG landed at our footsteps some years ago. What has been our approach as management educators. What do we need to do to contribute effectively? How do we use triple bottom/ ESG model?
  • The need is to engage with society as leader contributors and enablers. How much of what we do is inclusive, supportive and empowering societal stakeholder needs across the social spectrum?
